Describing a brand

Well-Known World Brand Logotypes

Source: http://www.vroomseo.ie

Your homework for Monday, 5 October:
Pick a popular brand (one your fellow students are likely to know) and prepare a short presentation about it.

Your description should answer the following three questions:

  • What kind of products are marketed under the brand?
  • Who buys (or is expected to buy) the products?
  • How would you describe the image and qualitites of the brand?

If you have the Market Leader Course Book at hand, have a look at page 6, exercise A3. You will find some adjectives there which you can use to describe brands.

And here are some expressions you can use to talk about brands:

  • I’m going to talk about a (car/computer/fashion/…) brand.
  • The brand comprises … (list of products)
  • The brand’s target group are …
  • The brand stands for … (+ noun)
  • The brand is said to be … (+ adjective)
  • The brand has a reputation of being … (+ adjective)

Prepare yourselves to say 3-6 sentences in class.

Course topics

Here is today’s board plan from the 12:30 class (group 4). Thanks to Maurizio who took the picture.course-topics If you can’t read my writing, it’s probably my fault. Don’t worry for now. You will learn everything in due time.

For those who’ve already got the book: You will find all the topics in the book, but in different order. We have changed the order so as to proceed from Brands through Organisation, Change and Travel to Money.

What is sustainability?

Your homework for Tuesday, 29 Sept:
Write up a short definition of what the word sustainability means, in your opinion.

To get started, It may help you to think about the two parts of the word: sustain|ability.

Also, it might be helpful to think small. You don’t have to include the whole planet in your definition. Just think about what sustainability means with regard to your own household, your budget and your lifestyle.

And please don’t just copy text from the internet.

Write 1-3 sentences in your own words.

Welcome to the blog

Bild Daniel Fuchs.200x266I’ve created this blog in order to provide you with materials related to our Business English classes at HNEE.

I’m going to write in English, but difficult words will be explained. Look out for words with a dotted line beneath them. When you place the mouse pointer over them, a text box with an explanation will pop up.

Posts are usually assigned one or more categories and tags. Categories (Downloads, Videos, Homework etc.) tell you what kind of help or assignments you will find in the post. Tags refer to topics from the textbook, such as Brands or Advertising. You can search for individual tags and categories using the sidebar.

There are three special categories which are marked by icons next to the post heading:

info Announcements: Important information. Please read.

homework Homework: Some assignment is waiting for you.

print Print: There are documents for you to print out and bring to the next class.

Otherwise, the blog is also meant to be a forum for feedback and suggestions on your part. There’s a special Feedback page, but in fact you may leave comments everywhere. Just click on the ‘Leave a reply’ link at the top of each post.

I hope you are enjoying the classes! English is a very rich and beautiful language, so let’s get rich and celebrate the beauty.

Best wishes,
Daniel
